Between suffering and detachment – working in the face of death in ICU

£10.00

  • Description

Description

Covid-19 has created extreme pressures for staff in the NHS. Working in ICU has been one of the most demanding and stressful experiences in this pandemic. Facing death to an unprecedented degree, in an alienated environment, without ordinary human contact with patients and colleagues, and with a workload far exceeding what is sustainable, staff feel emotionally and physically drained. Cutting off emotionally often seems the only way of coping, and yet contributes to burn-out.

Marcus Evans, Psychoanalyst and Mental Health Nurse, will be in conversation with Lydia Taylor and Simon O’Sullivan, both nurses working in ICUs in large London hospitals, to explore the emotional impact of this work. The event will be chaired by Anuradha Menon, Psychoanalyst and Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry.
